IPAF Harness Awareness, User and Inspection Course (HA, HU, HI)

The 1-day IPAF harness & lanyard course is designed for managers, supervisors and operatives, who are required to select, inspect and use appropriate harness and lanyards for MEWPs usage below.

This 1-day IPAF Harness Awareness (HA), User (HU) and Inspection (HI) course will take you through everything you need to know about safety harnesses and lanyards – from a general awareness of different types, how to fit and adjust them, what your legal responsibilities are and how to inspect harnesses to make sure their safe use on site.

The course is split into three sections: IPAF Harness Awareness (HA) this part can be completed as an e-learning course, IPAF Harness User (HU) and IPAF Harness Inspection (HI).

The training requires candidates to undertake a written test and practical assessment. On successful completion, delegates will be able to access their certification via the ePAL app. Should a physical PAL card and/or certificate be required, this must be requested at time of booking and will be charged at an extra cost.  The IPAF – International Powered Access Federation licence is internationally accepted and is valid for 5 years.

Entry requirements: Delegates must have a good understanding of English at operative level. The course content is suited to all ability levels.

What’s covered?

This IPAF Harness course is made up of three qualifications, which cover the following topics:

IPAF Harness Awareness (HA) & Harness User (HU):

  • An introduction to MEWPs and harnesses
  • The hierarchy of Person Fall Protective Equipment (PFPE)
  • Getting to grips with harness systems
  • Choosing a harness and lanyard
  • Safe anchor points
  • The hazards of boom platforms and vertical platforms
  • Carrying out pre-use checks
  • Safety risks and rescue
  • Donning and doffing
  • Cleaning and storing harnesses
  • Theory test
  • Practical test

IPAF Harness Inspection (HI):

  • An introduction to harness inspections
  • Inspections required by law
  • How to carry out detailed inspections
  • Longevity and obsolescence
  • How to spot damage
  • The criteria for failure
  • Inspection reports
  • Practical test including group discussion, inspection and documentation
  • Open book exam

HOW LONG IS EACH COURSE?

This depends on which course(s) are taken and which formats are chosen. For example, the HA Course alone could be taken as eLearning, remotely, in half a day or less.

Candidates taking both the HA and HU courses could do so consecutively, in-person at an IPAF training centre, led by an instructor, with a duration of half a day. Or they could have completed the HA Course by eLearning prior to attending an IPAF Approved Training Centre.

Candidates taking the HI Course must have previously passed the HA and HU courses prior to taking the HI Course in-person, at an IPAF Approved Training Centre, led by an instructor, with a duration of half a day.

On successfully completing this course, you’ll receive an IPAF certificate. All IPAF certification is issued electronically via ePAL.  The International Powered Access Federation licence is recognised internationally.

Delegates will be required to download the IPAF ePAL app onto their device to access any certification they hold with IPAF prior to the training taking place.

Should a physical PAL card and/or certificate be required, this must be requested at time of booking and will be charged at an additional cost.

  • Be able to identify a range of Person Fall Protective Equipment (PFPE)
  • Choose the right harness for the job
  • Understand the risks of working from MEWPs
  • Know how to check harnesses before use
  • Explain the importance of storing harnesses and lanyards correctly
  • Be able to fit and adjust a harness and lanyard effectively
  • Recognise suitable anchor points on MEWPs
