This CAT and Genny training course covers locating underground services, such as electricity and gas, during excavation work is not only essential to the health and safety of operatives working on an excavation, it is also vital to prevent costly disruptions during construction and civil engineering projects.
As a result, it is important that those working on the roads, no matter if they are an Operative or a Supervisor, are fully trained in using a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) along with a signal generator (Genny).
These two pieces of equipment work together to actively locate signals being omitted from pipes or cables that are hidden underground.
Entry requirements: Delegates must have good understanding of English at basic level.

- An introduction to cable avoidance tools (CAT) and signal generators (Gennys)
- Detecting underground pipes and cables
- Drawing comprehensive plans to locate services
- Health and safety legislation and HSG 47 guidance
- How to operate cable avoidance tools safely and effectively
- Identifying service plans (electricity, gas, telecoms and water)
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Recognising damaged and undamaged services
- Using ground-penetrating radar to locate underground services
- Various types of utility services
- Working in or near underground services

At the end of the CAT and Genny training course, you will have an understanding of:
- Demonstrate which PPE is required and why
- Easily locate underground services on a plan
- Explain safety procedures for evacuating or ground working
- Follow HSG 47 guidance for Avoiding Danger from Underground Services
- Identify damaged cables, pipes and services
- Locate a range of underground services
- Operate a CAT and Genny safely and effectively

Assessment details
The qualification is assessed through a theory assessment paper which the learner must successfully pass. Once completed the delegate will be awarded the CAT and Genny training qualification.
