Power Tool Safety Training
Davis Access delivers professional Power Tool Safety training courses from our Bristol training centre and onsite across the UK. This workplace safety course is designed for operatives, supervisors and managers who use portable and electrical power tools, helping improve hazard awareness, safe operating procedures, equipment inspections and compliance with current health and safety regulations across construction, engineering, maintenance and industrial environments.
Power tools are used every day across a wide range of industries to improve productivity and efficiency. However, if they are not used correctly, inspected properly, or maintained appropriately, they can present serious risks to both operators and those working nearby. Common workplace accidents involving power tools include cuts, lacerations, electric shock, burns, eye injuries, hearing damage, hand-arm vibration injuries, flying debris, and even fatal incidents. Most of these accidents can be prevented through proper training, safe working practices, regular inspections, and the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) place a legal duty on employers to ensure that all work equipment is suitable for its intended purpose, maintained in a safe condition, and used only by employees who have received adequate information, instruction, and training. This Power Tool Safety Training Course helps businesses meet these legal obligations while improving workplace safety and reducing the likelihood of accidents and equipment damage.
Throughout the course, delegates will develop a clear understanding of the different types of power tools commonly used in the workplace, including drills, grinders, circular saws, reciprocating saws, jigsaws, impact drivers, sanders, nail guns, and other portable equipment. Learners will understand the hazards associated with each type of equipment and the importance of selecting the correct tool for the task.
The Power Tool Safety training course places a strong emphasis on carrying out pre-use inspections before operating any power tool. Delegates will learn how to identify damaged cables, worn accessories, missing guards, defective switches, loose components, battery faults, and other defects that could make equipment unsafe to use. They will also understand the importance of removing defective tools from service and reporting faults immediately.
Safe operating techniques form a key part of the training. Delegates will learn how to maintain good working posture, secure workpieces correctly, avoid kickback hazards, manage trailing cables, maintain safe working distances, and ensure guards and safety devices remain fitted during operation. The course also explains the importance of good housekeeping, maintaining clean work areas, and reducing trip hazards around the workplace.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is another essential element of the course. Delegates will understand when safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, respiratory protective equipment, safety footwear, and other PPE should be worn to minimise the risk of injury while operating power tools.
The Power Tool Safety training course also introduces delegates to common workplace hazards associated with power tool use, including electrical safety, dust exposure, excessive noise, vibration, flying particles, and manual handling risks. Learners will understand how suitable control measures and safe systems of work can significantly reduce these hazards.
By completing this Power Tool Safety Training Course, delegates will gain the knowledge required to operate power tools safely, identify hazards before work begins, and contribute to creating a safer working environment for everyone.
