CPC Training
The Driver CPC is for LGV and PCV drivers who drive professionally throughout the UK. It has been developed as a requirement of the EU Directive 2003/59, which is designed to improve the knowledge and skills of professional LGV and PCV drivers throughout their working life. There are two parts to the legislation:
• The Initial Qualification must be achieved by new LGV and PCV drivers along with their vocational licence to enable them to use their licence professionally.
• Periodic Training; 35 hours of training every 5 years must be attended by all professional drivers.
The deadline for your drivers to complete their 35 hours of periodic training is either 9thSeptember 2013 for bus & coach drivers and 9thSeptember 2014 for lorry drivers.
The Myth
It is common belief that if you wait until closer to the deadline you will have longer before you have to complete the next 35 hours training, this is a myth. Once drivers have completed their 35 hours training before the 2014 deadline, they will then have a further 5 years to complete the next training before the following deadline in 2019.
Why now?
In November 2011 the FTA’s national training manager Isobel Harding said “The current gap of five million training hours is getting worse and we predict there could be as much as a 30 per cent shortfall in the number of legally qualified drivers of heavy goods vehicles before 2014.”
Without your drivers holding a Driver Qualification Card (DQC) they will be unable to driver for you, which could result in in obviously devastating consequences. Our recommendation is that you book training courses early to ensure places, avoid your drivers missing the deadline and the predicted increase in training prices as demand rises.
All completed training will be registered on the central driver database.
